EDP Renewables has entered into its first PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) in Germany. As announced by the company on Thursday, the power purchase contract was concluded with Lhyfe via Kronos Solar EDPR.
Lhyfe is a French company specializing in green hydrogen production. Kronos Solar EDPR will supply Lhyfe with electricity from a 55-megawatt solar project for a duration of 15 years, expected to come online in 2025 in Meuselwitz, Thuringia. The facility is projected to generate approximately 58 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually, which Lhyfe intends to use to power its future production facilities for green hydrogen with clean energy.
Lhyfe is currently building two manufacturing facilities in Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony with a maximum total production capacity of eight tons of green hydrogen per day and also has plans for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The hydrogen will be supplied locally for mobility applications and industrial processes. "Thanks to this agreement, we are securing our supply of renewable electricity locally and in the long term," said Matthieu Guesné, CEO and founder of Lhyfe. The company is expanding its strategic relationship with EDPR and looks forward to their collaboration in the hydrogen industry. Lhyfe is currently present in twelve European countries.
"The signing of this long-term agreement with Lhyfe is an important milestone for EDPR as it underscores our commitment to a stronger market position in the renewable energy sector in Europe," said Duarte Bello, COO for Europe at EDP Renewables. According to EDPR, it intends to operate around 500 megawatts of photovoltaics in Germany by 2026. From Kronos Solar EDPR's perspective, the PPA paves the way for future projects.
EDP Renewables entered the German market in 2022 through the acquisition of Kronos Solar and currently claims to have a photovoltaic pipeline of more than eight gigawatts in various development stages. By the end of the decade, the company also plans to develop wind projects in Germany.
